Big Band featured in annual concert

The Williamson County Community Band will kick off its 13th season in grand style with a special evening concert featuring “5 Points Swing” Tuesday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Franklin Theatre, 419 Main Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Williamson County Community Band director Ken Krause will deliver a rich evening of entertainment starting with Big Band music by 5 Points Swing.

Founded in 2011, 5 Points Swing, a 20-piece band led by Matt Jablonka, features musicians who are dedicated to preserving Big Band and swing music.

“I’ve always loved swing music, even when I was in college. That’s how I made my spending money. I’ve been playing for almost 60 years,” said Jablonka. The saxophonist developed a love for Big Band music at Virginia Military Institute, where he played with the VMI Commanders. “I think swing music appeals to people because they can identify with the melody, and they can dance to it.”

5 Points Swing, a moniker derived from the popular intersection in downtown Franklin, will re-create the sounds of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra. Some of the bands favorite pieces include “Blue Moon,” “For Sentimental Reasons,” and “I’ll Never Smile Again.”

Following 5 Points Swing, the entire the community band will perform addtional numbers under the direction of Krause.

Laurie Kamunen, program administrator for WCPR, is pleased to be back in the historic Franklin Theatre for a second year. “Last year’s concert will be hard to top,” Kamunen said. “We were overwhelmed with the community support for our band, and really look forward to another sell-out crowd.”

Tickets are available at the Franklin Theatre box offi ce or on-line at www.

For this event, cabaret seating is $20, balcony seating is $15 and classic seating is $10.
