Co-owners Brian and Erin Welch “traded corporate outfits for jeans and T-shirts” when the couple recently opened Whit’s Frozen Custard shop, located at 4020 Hughes Crossing, Suite 100, in the Berry Farms development in Franklin.

The store held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday with friends, family, Williamson, Inc. chamber members and elected-city officials.

“Even the first day with zero advertising, the line was out the door,” Brian Welch said to the crowd at the ceremony.

“We have been blown away,” Erin said. “The response has been overwhelming.”

The couple moved to the Williamson County area about two years ago after quitting corporate jobs in Columbus, Ohio to pursue entrepreneurial projects, which led to expertly making frozen custard.

Erin described the difference to eager consumers Monday between ice cream and frozen custard. She explained that custard presents a creamier texture with less fillers such as added sugar.

With a shortage of frozen custard shops in the South, the couple wanted to bring their favorite sweet treat from further north to Franklin.

Whit’s offers a special flavor of the week such as Chocolate Covered Strawberry, Almond Joy and even a caramel toffee blend with chocolate-covered pretzels.

The shops hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
