Shorter Chapel AME Church is seeking nominations from the community for the Shorter 150th Awards.

These awards are presented to individuals and organizations who have contributed to the betterment of Williamson County in honor of Shorter Chapel’s 150th anniversary.

Award Categories are:

  • Exemplary Ministry Through Music Award

  • Outstanding Youth Award

  • Best Community Organization Award

  • Economic Justice Award

  • Shorter Chapel Lifetime Achievement Award

Awards will be presented on Aug. 10 at the Shorter Chapel Awards Gala (nominees must be present to win).

Shorter Chapel AME Church, located at 255 Natchez St. in Franklin, is turning 150 years old this year. The church is one of the oldest African American churches in the state of Tennessee and is listed on the Tennessee and National Historic Registries.

Award Categories and Criteria

Exemplary Ministry Through Music Award

The Exemplary Ministry Through Music Award is given to an individual, group or church choir in Franklin or the surrounding area that has demonstrated Christian leadership through the gift of music. Nominees must have contributed significantly to their community by sharing the gift of Christian music both inside and outside of formal church settings.

Outstanding Youth Award

The Outstanding Youth Award is given to a youth between the ages of 12 to 18 who has demonstrated a commitment to Christian leadership. Nominees must have a history of volunteerism, leadership and community service in Williamson County.

Best Community Organization Award

The Best Community Organization Award is given to a Christ-centered non-profit organization that has a proven track record of providing assistance to those in need in Williamson County. Nominees must have a track record of providing aid to disadvantaged populations.

Economic Justice Award

The Economic Justice Award is given to an organization or individual with a proven track record of working to create economic opportunity and empowerment for disenfranchised communities. This can include work in support of fair wages, job training and financial fitness. Nominees must work with disadvantaged populations in Williamson County.

Shorter Chapel Lifetime Achievement Award

The Shorter Chapel Lifetime Achievement Award is given an individual who has made significant contributions to promoting the goals of Shorter Chapel and the A.M.E. Church over a period of 20 plus years. Nominees must have an established history of distinguished service to both the Christian community and the community at-large. Nominees must have demonstrated over an extended period of time volunteerism, spiritual growth and development, church leadership, outstanding Christian character and a lifetime of achievements anchored, rooted and grounded in faith and love and the principles of Shorter Chapel A.M.E. Church.
