Fans of old movies know exactly what a Murphy bed is: that funny bed designed to transform a kitchen or living room into a bedroom by unfolding from a wall or closet that made for great fodder for comedy skits.
Developed by William L. Murphy in 1900 as a way to create additional space in a cramped San Francisco apartment, the Murphy wall bed is no longer funny, but rather it has evolved into a fine piece of furniture that can be found in upscale homes, lofts and apartments as well as the tiny Cape Cod abode.
Now the nation’s largest wall bed retailer has opened its 38th store in Cool Springs making the Murphy bed easier to acquire. More Space Place is designated as a premiere gallery for state of the art organizational furniture including the Murphy bed, which has enjoyed a renewed popularity even in Williamson County homes where space is not necessarily a problem.
“The Murphy beds are perfect for small spaces, but they are also perfect for large spaces,” said Cynthia Crego, store owner. “In a large house it’s important to be organized or you can lose things. Now you can have an exercise room, a craft room or a playroom for the grandchildren, and still offer guests a comfortable place to sleep. The (Murphy) beds are unique and everybody can use one.”
More Space Place offers several styles of Murphy beds including the popular Cosmopolitan, a low-profile panel bed that drops down horizontally rather than vertically for rooms that are narrow or have low ceilings or height constraints like that attic room that has been hard to furnish.
