TV ads, mail and consultants top the list of spending

So where did the $454,000 spent in the Republican primary for the 23rd District state Senate go?
• Lots of television advertising, whether to Comcast cable or Nashville television stations. Jack Johnson, who won the Aug. 3 primary, reports spending more than $30,000 with Comcast Spotlight, the advertising division of the cable provider.
One of his opponents, Tom Neill, spent more than $100,000 with Neon Marketing on Birchwood Circle in Franklin for advertising. According to incorporation documents, Todd White is the owner of that firm. Neill also spent more than $18,000 with Yake Films, which produced commercials for him. His disclosure statement doesn’t show any purchases with Comcast or network stations in the market, but those can be disclosed on his final report.
Ray “Chip” Throckmorton III, another opponent and second-place finisher in the race, reported spending $93,000 with Results Media & Marketing of Nashville for advertising, as well as an additional $595 with Video One Productions of Goodlettsville for advertising.
• To mailing, whether for production of the mailer or just the cost of mailing it. Throckmorton spent $13,000 with the U.S. Postal Service for mailing, while Johnson’s reports show spending under $3,000 in this category. Neill reports spending more than $8,000 with the Postal Service in the two reports he has filed. • For polling and political consultants
Neill’s disclosure statements show more than $11,000 to Pam Hoagland of Hopewood Court in Franklin for “campaign workers” and an additional $4,000 to Melissa Miller, a political consultant from College Grove.
Johnson shows $4,000 to Tommy Nelms of Fairview for campaign workers in his reports and more than $12,000 to Public Opinion Strategies of Alexandria, Va., for “research/polling.”
Throckmorton spent more than $18,000 with Jeff Cassman Consulting “for professional services,” according to his reports. He also spent a couple thousand dollars with various other individuals, labeling those “for professional services” as well.
