Obituary: Buryl McClurg being remembered for dedication to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Buryl Gene McClurg, age 79, former stake president for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is being remembered for his dedication to the church.

McClurg and his wife Diane, who survives, moved to Franklin in January 1978 and while active in the church in other locations they had lived while Mr. McClurg worked for a department store chain, after arriving in Franklin, he further devoted himself to the church.

McClurg served as mission president’s counselor, stake president, stake president's counselor, patriarch, district president, bishop and counselor. He was also called as president of the Nashville Tennessee Temple, which was dedicated May 21, 2000, on Ernest Rice Lane in Franklin, just off Mack Hatcher Parkway. Temple presidents are called to oversee all activities performed at the temple. They serve voluntarily, usually for a period of several years and McClurg served from 2000-04.

After moving to Franklin, Mr. McClurg owned  a small construction company, called BGM Enterprises, which did finish work for tenant spaces. He was born in Smackover, Ark., to the late Odas Huland and Lucille White McClurg.

The McClurgs enjoyed all types of dancing, having met when both were at Brigham Young University, from which Mr. McClurg graduated.

“We met by mutual friend at BYU and then knew each other and then were attracted to each other while at a dance,” Mrs. McClurg said.

He is survived by wife, Diane McClurg; sons, Daniel (Elsie) McClurg and Thomas (Alycia) McClurg; daughter, Lynn (Robert) Grzech; brother, Odas (Linda) McClurg; sisters, Jerry Matheson and Camille (Galin) Lundell; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Services for McClurg will be 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 17, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow in Harpeth Hills Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Willowbrook Hospice. Williamson Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
