Five local high school bands will come together at Christ Community Church on Saturday, Oct. 24 in what the student ministry has come to know as Narthex.
Narthex, which means a gathering place, will feature the music of Dylan, Jake and Shaun; Upon The March, Victoria, The Pursuits and Redmond/Dente in a quarterly musical event.
Performances are a combination of “melodic to hard core by 16- to 18-year-old local public, private high school students and
home-schooled students,” according to advisor and church deacon Charlie Redmond.
“There are not a lot of places for these kids to play,” said Redmond, who, although was not in a band when he was a kid, did help set up the sound for high school bands. Today, Redmond mentors other would be sound techs in setting up the Narthex performances.
Another church member and long time lead singer for Christian rock band White Heart, Rick Florian also serves as a mentor to the students.
Redmond also offers his expertise as a 25-year music industry exec, however from the planning to the performance the Narthex efforts are all done by the students.
“The kids came up with the name and the concept last year,” Redmond said. “It’s a one word. It has an X in it. X is a cool letter, a symbol, that gives off a rock and roll vibe.”
Julian Tan, this year a college freshman, who is still active in the group, designed the logo last year.
The cover charge is $5, which benefits local and overseas youth mission trips. Church groups make three mission trips each summer, two national trips and one abroad. The funds offset the cost of travel expenses, scholarship and support the students in their travel endeavors.
Redmond said, “The goal is to raise $8,000 to $10,000 per year with these events.”
In addition to the event Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Christ Community Church, 1215 Hillsboro Road, Franklin, the next Narthex performance is tentatively scheduled for February with one more following before the end of the school year.
“The vision behind [Narthex] was for want of a safe venue to express their musical talents in Williamson County,” said Sherman Bucher, the senior coordinator of the senior high ministry. “The only requirement to join the group or sign up with your band is that you have to live in Williamson County and the majority of band mates have to be in high school.
