Youth, Junior Orchestras to perform Nov. 8

The Williamson County Youth & Junior Orchestra Concert will present its first concert of the season on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. at the New River Fellowship, 1097 Murfreesboro Road in Franklin.
The strings concert is free and open to the public. The youth orchestras feature more than 75 middle school and high school student musicians hailing from more than 25 high schools, middle schools and home school associations in the Middle Tennessee area. Mark Johnson serves as the Youth Orchestra director. Melissa Edgington directs the Junior Orchestra.
Student soloists will include Lauren Conklin, Jessica Graves, Olivia Henson, Grace Hicks and Matthew Stovall from the Youth Orchestra and Kevin Wu from the Junior Orchestra. According to Johnson, a special surprise artist will also appear.
Youth Orchestra selections will include “Concerto for Three” by Antonio Vivaldi, arr. by Lloyd Conley; “Prelude” from An English Suite, by C.H. Parry, arr. by Paul Lavender; “The Red Pony” by Aaron Copland, arr. by Erik Morales; “She’s Leaving Home,” by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, arr. by Mike Leander; and “Dances for Orchestra” by Richard Meyer.
The Junior Orchestra will perform “Wood Splitter Fanfare” by Brian Balmages; “Dumfries Place” arranged by Robert D. McCashin; “Lebedike Honga” arranged by Julie Lyonn Lieberman; “Czardas” arranged by Elliot Del Borgo; and “Sleepers Wake” by JS Bach, arranged by Soon Hee Newbold.
Sponsors for the orchestras include Community Arts Foundation; Nashville Parent Magazine; Nissan; Qi for Life Acupuncture Clinic; and Renaissance Benefit Advisors. The Arts Builds Communities program is funded by the Tennessee General Assembly and administered in cooperation with the Tennessee Arts Commission and The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
Auditions for the Youth and Junior Orchestra for the November 2009 through May 2010 season will be held through Nov. 8. Auditions may be scheduled by registering on the Youth Orchestra web site.
