Williamson Medical Center names Infection Preventionist as Employee of the Year

Infection Preventionist Vicki Sweeney, R.N., recently was named Employee of the Year at Williamson Medical Center.

Under Sweeney’s guidance and leadership, Williamson Medical Center has achieved remarkable feats in patient safety. WMC has gone nearly two years without a reported incident of ventilator-associated pneumonia or central line-associated bloodstream infection.

In addition, WMC boasts more than an 80 percent hand hygiene compliance rate among its employees, which is more than double the national average for hospitals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It is such a great honor,” says Sweeney, who credits much of her success to co-workers. “My goal has always been to help keep patients at WMC safe, and our staff has done a wonderful job with our initiatives to make that goal achievable.”

Her commitment to best practices in patient safety has been recognized by her peers regionally and nationally. Sweeney recently presented best practices on behalf of Williamson Medical Center at a national convention in Baltimore for the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, as well as regionally at a convention for the Tennessee Hospital Association. She also was invited to speak to health care professionals from five hospitals in northern Mississippi.

Sweeney joined WMC’s staff in 2003 as a surgical nurse on the Fourth Floor before moving to the Critical Care Unit. Four years later, she transitioned to her current role in Infection Prevention.

Cassie Davenport, R.N., Quality and Safety director, says she is proud of Sweeney’s hard work and dedication to keeping patients safe.

“It’s important that people know about the good work she’s doing,” Davenport says. “Patient safety is our No. 1 priority, and Vicki has done an outstanding job educating us on the importance of infection prevention.”

Employee of the Year contenders are Employee of the Quarter winners from 2011. The three finalists were Neal Miles, Marketing and Public Relations senior graphic designer; Kim Murdock, Education Department assistant; and Brian Woznicki, Education Department media specialist.

Williamson Medical Center is a 185-bed hospital fully accredited by The Joint Commission that provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care including emergency services, with credentialed physicians in 53 specialties and sub-specialties. The community-focused hospital offers a wide range of wellness services, screenings and classes. For more information about Williamson Medical Center, visit www.williamsonmedicalcenter.org
