BGA names new Athletic & Wellness Center in honor of Jewell family
Battle Ground Academy has honored the three generations of the Jewell family by naming its new Athletic & Wellness Center in their honor, announced Eddie Lunn, Jr., chairman of the BGA Board of Trustees. Effective immediately, the 40,000-square-foot facility will be known as the Jewell Athletic & Wellness Center.
“For more than five decades, the Jewell family has been a part of the fabric of BGA,” said Lunn. “With three family members in our Sports Hall of Fame, this is a perfect fit.”
BGA opened the 27,600-square-foot first floor of the Jewell Athletic & Wellness Center to students in April 2012. This phase includes a 40-yard by 40-yard indoor turf practice field, a four-lane sprint track, weight room and storage space. In addition to being utilized by BGA’s athletic teams, it will also be the centerpiece for a new comprehensive wellness program for all students. The school is currently finalizing the fundraising for the second floor, which will include offices, locker rooms, meeting space and a training room.
“On behalf of our entire family, we are deeply humbled by this honor,” said John B. Jewell III, BGA class of 1962. “This school has given us so much and we are pleased to be a part of its future, as well as its past. The most rewarding part is knowing that this facility will help all BGA students to lead a healthier life.”
The Jewells were recognized at a recent lunch where John Jewell, Fielding “Dickey” Jewell (BGA class of 1961), James Jewell, Sr. and Betsy Jewell Adgent accepted the honor on behalf of the rest of the family. Through the years, 18 members of the Jewell’s extended family have graduated from BGA. Currently, 13 children are enrolled.
BGA broke ground on the Jewell Athletic & Wellness Center in May 2011. The building’s architect was Chris Ross, a 1970 BGA graduate. It was built by Century Construction, which is owned by Jim Cross, parent of Madeline Cross (BGA class of 2010) and Will Cross (BGA class of 2013).
Established in 1889, Battle Ground Academy is a coeducational, college preparatory school for grades kindergarten through 12th grade. More information on the school can be found at www.battlegroundacademy.org.
