Get Fit Franklin Nov. 17 kick-off walk drawing a crowd, participants asked to bring healthy food items for Graceworks Food Pantry
Saturday’s kick-off walk of the Get Fit Franklin project, presented by Franklin Tomorrow with founding partner BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, is drawing a hundreds of people, all of whom are being asked to bring a healthy food item for the Graceworks Food Pantry.
Get Fit Franklin is a distance walking project designed to encourage residents to take the first steps to a healthier, more active community by stepping out their front door. Get Fit Franklin will provide residents with pre-measured and marked walking routes in an effort
to increase the level of physical activity among the city’s residents.
All routes use existing sidewalk networks where available.
You can register at www.getfitfranklintn.org as an individual, family, corporate team, neighborhood or walking group or in the most popular category to date — families. The online registration tool for the program allows you to choose which category you register in and register multiple individuals.
The kickoff event on Nov. 17 at Pinkerton Park, 405 Murfreesboro Road, will provide an opportunity to those who pre-register to pick up their Get Fit Franklin t-shirt and pedometer, as well as other items to support their efforts to get fit.
“With the Get Fit Franklin kickoff event just a few days before Thanksgiving, we thought it would be a great way to boost Graceworks Food Pantry and hopefully with healthy food choices, although all non-perishable food items will be accepted,” said Kathie Moore, Franklin Tomorrow Board president.
This is just another aspect of trying to build new collaborations, which is part of the mission of Franklin Tomorrow, Moore said, adding the clients at BrightStone will help to assemble the goody bags for the participants and Franklin Tomorrow through Get Fit
Franklin will make a donation to support their program to provide adults with disabilities educational and vocational opportunities.
The event will begin at 10 a.m., but the actual walk will take place at 11 a.m. Prior to that, The Bean from The Maples Shopping Center and New York Bagel Cafe & Deli in Gateway Village will provide light refreshments. Fresh fruit will also be available and Franklin Synergy Bank will provide water for the event.
The Franklin Fire and Police Departments will be on hand, as well as Solid Waste and the Parks Departments. The Franklin Police and Fire Departments will provide information on road safety and basic first aid and basic CPR.
To register, go to www.getfitfranklintn.org. The first 500 participants to register for the program will receive T-shirts and other promotional materials during the kick-off walk, set for Nov. 17 at Pinkerton Park, with Franklin Mayor Ken Moore.
Initial routes for individual walking will focus on three areas of the city, in the areas of Fieldstone Farms/Williamson County Rec Center, Downtown Franklin, and McKay’s Mill/East Franklin/Carothers Parkway.
