BA's Barnett named Mr. Football

Brentwood Academy’s Derek Barnett was named the 2012 Tennessee Titans Division II-AA Mr. Football Lineman of the Year Monday in Murfreesboro, breaking a nine-year drought in which athletes from Williamson County had not won the award.

Barnett, a 6-foot-4 junior, had 10 catches for 196 yards and three touchdowns at tight end while excelling on the defensive line with 48 total tackles (27 solo, 21 assisted), 15 tackles for loss, and seven sacks.

“It was a blessing,” Barnett said of his emotions after hearing his named called. “To win the award is pretty cool because of all the guys who have won it before.”

BA’s King Dunlap, now an offensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles, was Williamson County’s last Mr. Football winner Dunlap in 2002.

Barnett was more excited to represent his school and teammates than breaking the county’s drought.

It was his first year starting for the Eagles, who went 9-3 on the season and lost to Memphis University School in the semifinals.

“I was behind some good guys last year like Woody (Baron),” he said. “I learned from them. They set a high bar for me.”

Baron graduated from BA in 2012, committing to Virginia Tech.

First-year Eagle coach Cody White called Barnett an exceptional player and he looks forward to seeing where his talents will take him.

“He really got himself fine-tuned in his techniques,” White said. “Continuing this process, he’s going to be a special player and really just a great kid to work with. God’s gifted him with some special gifts and I think he’s going to do a lot of good things with them.”

Teammate Jalen Ramsey was one of three finalists for the Division II-AA Back of the Year award that went to Ensworth running back Corn Elder for the second consecutive year. Elder, a 5-foot-10 running back / defensive back, ran for 2,228 yards and 33 touchdowns. Ramsey, a 6-foot-1 wide receiver / safety, caught 29 passes for 671 yards and 10 touchdowns while making 49 tackles, forcing five fumbles, intercepting five passes, and blocking five kicks.

Brentwood High School’s Logan Teichmann was beat out for the Division I Class AAA Lineman of the Year award by Bradley Central’s Austin Sanders. Teichmann was a three-year starter and senior captain for the Bruins who graded out at an average of 92 percent. He had 43 pancakes on the offensive line and 34 tackles – six for loss – on the defensive side of the ball.

More than 500 people, including the honorees, their families, coaches, school administrators, and members of the media from all parts of Tennessee attended the luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Murfreesboro.

“Today’s celebration recognizes more than the ability of these young men to play our great game of football,” said Titans Owner K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr.  “The young men were here because of their outstanding character and academic achievements, traits which will pave their way through life long after their football days has passed. I congratulate all of the Titans Mr. Football Award finalists for the outstanding manner in which they represent their school and community.”

High School head coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists with a committee of statewide sports writers selecting the winners based on their performance in the 2012 regular season.
