Citizens for Brentwood Green Space meets challenge grant goal

The Citizens for Brentwood Green Space (CBGS) announced recently that their $100,000 challenge grant has been met. “Last June, an anonymous donor offered to match all gifts up to $100,000 through the end of the year,” remarked CBGS President Gil Hutchinson.    “We are excited that, when added with other private donations received, almost $167,000 in pledges and cash in total were raised in our first full year of fund raising towards helping Brentwood purchase the remaining property at Ravenswood Farm.”

Brentwood’s acquisition of 320 acres at Ravenswood to create the new Marcella Vivrette Smith Park in December 2010 was the largest land purchase ever in the City’s History. The City has an opportunity to purchase an additional 80 acres at Ravenswood Farm from The Conservation Fund – a non-profit organization that saves America’s favorite outdoor places and currently holds an Option for the property. This purchase is subject to raising $3 million from outside sources such as grants from other governments, foundations, private sources and in-kind services.

CBGS formally announced their goal to help raise funds over the next five years towards the acquisition of the remaining 80 acres at Ravenswood Farm in late 2011. The City of Brentwood authorized an agreement in April 2012 with the nonprofit group regarding fund raising activities for facilities and improvements at the park. CBGS is helping the city solicit sponsorships for the park as part of its fundraising mission.

“While we’ve had a great start, much more is still needed if we are going to help the City acquire the remaining 80 acres by the end of 2013,” said Hutchinson. “For anyone that has ever wanted to do something to help preserve green space in our community, this is their opportunity to make a difference.”
