Bruins nab second-straight overtime win

The Brentwood boys basketball team took an early advantage on the District 11-AAA standings Friday night, going on the road and defeating Hillsboro 48-44 in overtime.

Sophomore James McPherson sent the game into an extra period with a contested left-handed layup as time expired. Receiving an inbounds pass with 9.4 seconds remaining in regulation, McPherson fought to get a pass to senior Asa Duvall coming off a screen but was unable to. Instead, he drove from the top of the key to his left for the game-tying basket.

“He is such a perfect point guard for us,” Bruins coach Dennis King said outside the post-game locker room. “He knew the time (he had). He has the highest basketball IQ.”

Andy Schumpert hit a 3-pointer two minutes into overtime to give Brentwood a 43-40 advantage while McPherson sealed the win by making five of six free throws down the stretch.

Brentwood (17-2, 2-0) jumped to a 16-7 lead after one quarter of play as Jacob Adcock scored eight of his team-high 14 points in the opening eight minutes.

With senior posts Will Jones and Cody Shelton sidelined with injuries, King has been thrilled with the play of Adock.

“Losing Jones and Shelton – those are three-year starters inside,” he said. “Adcock, his learning curve has been so quick and he gives us a toughness inside that we didn’t really expect. We’re really happy with him.”

Hillsboro (14-2, 1-1) struggled to find open shots for the majority of the contest, not taking their first lead until 30 seconds into the second half. Burros star JaMonte Davis, a 6-foot-8 forward, played a limited role offensively – being held to 10 points.

William Fleming was Hillsboro main scoring threat – totaling 18 points.

The win was Brentwood’s second overtime victory in a row, following their 74-70 win Tuesday night against Independence. They now sit atop the 11-AAA standings as the only undefeated team in league play.
