John Watkins Sr., obituary
John Greer Watkins, Sr., age 74 of Franklin, Tenn., died at his home on Jan. 11, 2013.
He was born, one of 21 children, Feb 18, 1938 in the Harpeth Community, where he attended Harpeth School and Cowles Chapel United Methodist Church.
He served in both the National Guard and the U.S. Navy, before meeting the love of his life, Yvonne. He was owner and operator of Watkins Floor Covering, which later became Watkins Decorating for 48 years before closing in October.
He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all. He loved making his family happy and spending time with friends, crawfish boils and going to casinos. He was preceded in death by his recently departed wife Yvonne Watkins, their love story continued even in death, as he joined his loving wife on her birthday; son, John Greer “Tarzan” Watkins, Jr.; grandson, Jonathan Dustin Watkins; mother, Annie Mae Holt (Poteete) Watkins and father, William Henry Watkins. Mr. Watkins is survived by: daughters, Shari Ann (Alvin Chesnut) Watkins and Patti Sue Watkins; grandchildren, Colton Greer (Kristin) Gambill and John Dylan Jervis; great grandchild, Carson Greer Gambill, brother, Jimmy Watkins (Beverly); sister, Lucille Harper (Sam) and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Jan. 15, 2013 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, Jim Taylor and Father Tran officiating. Interment was in Poteete Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Jimmy Poirrier, Colton Greer Gambill, John Dylan Jervis, Danny Garner, David, Roy and Troy Watkins and David Lane. Honorary pallbearers were employees of Watkins Decorating, Dr. Robert Richter, Linda Holt Moore and supportive friends, family and caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials for the perpetual care of Poteete Cemetery may be made payable to Jimmy Watkins and dropped off at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Williamson Memorial Funeral Home in Franklin.
