The Brentwood boys basketball extended their winning streak to 13 games Friday night, defeating Independence 62-54 in Thompson’s Station.
“I’m just proud of how focused we are,” Bruins coach Dennis King said. “These guys come out every night and execute the game plan. They play their butts off and we have not had one of those sleepy Tuesday nights.”
Brentwood (21-2, 6-0) jumped to a 32-16 lead after one half of play, holding Independence (14-7,3-2) scoreless for a seven-minute stretch of the second quarter.
Despite holding a double-digit advantage for the majority of the night, the Brentwood coach expected his opponent to make a comeback.
“They’re too good (to not) make a run,” he said. “If it gets to 10 or if it gets to six, whatever it gets to, keep your composure. Somebody is going to make a big shot for us.”
The Eagles began to make that run early in the fourth quarter, cutting Brentwood’s lead to eight points with 5:45 remaining in the contest on a Lucas Luttrell basket.
Coming off the bench, Luttrell led Indy with 15 points – all coming in the second half.
“It’s tough playing catch up against any team in this district, especially against them,” first-year Independence coach Greg Glass said. “We missed a good opportunity at home, but we’ll come in (Saturday) and look at film and regroup to get ready for Tuesday.”
Both teams opened the game sloppy as the contest remained scoreless for nearly the first two minutes of game play.
Despite surging into contention in the fourth quarter, Independence could never get within striking distance as they were forced to expend so much energy catching up that they didn’t have enough left to overtake the district leaders.
Brentwood was balanced on offense throughout the night as four players totaled double-digit points. Junior Andy Schumpert led the Bruins with 17 points while classmate Jacob Adcock added 14 – 10 coming in the first half. Asa Duvall and Jack Bautista each had 11 points.
The Bruins next host Hillsboro Tuesday while Independence travels to Ravenwood.
