African American Heritage Society – ‘A Black Tie Affair’
By Derby Jones, Publisher
Faith was evident at the Embassy Suites Friday night. There was no doubt that the attendees of the African American Heritage Society’s A Black Tie Affair represented the event’s theme, “We have come this far by faith,” with pride.
This year the society recognized African-American churches in Williamson County and the congregations showed up in their Sunday best to honor not only the churches, but community leaders and families from the county that paved the way for African Americans.
Former “American Idol” finalist and Williamson County resident Melinda Doolittle served as Honorary Chairwoman for the evening and led the crowd in a rousing rendition of the song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
Not to be outdone by Doolittle’s star power, the young Quintavious Johnson, of Franklin, put on quite a performance to an appreciative crowd.
“I love to sing and I love Melinda Doolittle,” said Johnson. “This is an awesome event.”
The AAHS, along with presenter Elder Hewitt Sawyers, recognized the county’s oldest church – First Franklin Primitive Baptist Church – and the oldest association, the Lynn Creek Primitive Baptist Association.
The Perkins Jordan Family was presented the African American Pioneer Family Award.
Representatives from the Jordan family traveled from throughout the country to attend the gala, and to honor their ancestor Perkins Jordan, who was born in Williamson County in 1848.
Eleanor Bright, African American Heritage Society board member, presented awards in a variety of categories. The honorees were:
Business: James Maurice and Evelyn Pope of Moe Better BBQ & Fish
Civic: Howard Donnell and Barbara Sue Lane
Communication: Brandy Blanton of Southern Exposure Magazine
Education: Mayes Waters, Jr. and George Northern
Religion: Elder Vernon Ray McGuire, Jr.
Organization: Ty2 Foundation, Nancy Osman and Brant Bousquet
After the benediction, led by the Rev. Dr. William W. Easley, Jr., the party continued with dancing to the music of Julius Fisher and the Genius Band.
