Bruin win streak ends in district semifinals

District 11-AAA’s regular-season champion will not be their tournament champion as Brentwood fell 44-40 to Hillsboro in overtime Friday night.
The Bruins were seconds away from extending their win streak to 18 games, leading 37-35 before B.J. Fleming slipped free under the basket for a wide-open layup as time expired.
“It was a long, long winning streak,” Brentwood coach Dennis King said after the game. “The sad thing is we had our chance – if we had one stop we win the game. It was a flip flop of the game we had here a month ago.”
In their prior meeting at Hillsboro, sophomore point guard James McPherson sent the game into overtime with a last-second layup of his own as the Bruins went on to a 48-44 win.
History did not repeat itself as Hillsboro took a four-point advantage in the extra period before Cody Shelton hit three foul shots with 41 seconds remaining. Brentwood failed to capitalize though as the team missed several close attempts in the final minute while Hillsboro missed 4-of-7 from the charity stripe in the overtime.
“We just missed a lot of shots that we normally don’t,” said King. “I don’t know if it’s the eight days off or this gym. A lot of it is because there are some big, talented guys that throw your shot off (with Hillsboro).”
Brentwood fell behind 13-5 in the second quarter as 6-foot-8 Jamonte Davis dominated with multiple highlight reel dunks – awakening what was a quiet crowd.
The Bruins trailed from Hillsboro’s first possession of the second quarter until Jack Bautista hit two free throws at the 2:05 mark of the fourth.
“I was very proud of how we battled back and took the lead,” King said. “It came down to one possession to have a win. To give Hillsboro credit, they took care of business.”
Shelton led the Bruins with 14 points while Andy Schumpert chipped in with 12.
Davis had a game-high 18 points for Hillsboro.
Brentwood moves on to face Ravenwood in the district’s consolation game at 5:30 p.m. while Hillsboro will meet Independence at 8:30 p.m. for the district crown.
