Becker resigns as Centennial wrestling coach

Centennial High School is on the search for a new wrestling coach as Matthew Becker resigned effective at the end of the TSSAA Individual State Tournament.

“He did a really good job for us,” Centennial Athletic Director Chris Whitefield said. “We were really happy to have him and are sorry to see him go.”

Becker, on staff at Centennial since 2009, leaves to return to California – where he previously lived for more than 16 years - for what is being called “family obligations.”

“The back-and-forth commuting cross country to see my wife every six-to-eight weeks just wasn’t working,” Becker said. “I got accepted into a law school and only lost a year of credits.”

Becker’s wife was relocated to California for business purposes.

Having just completed his third year of law school at Nashville School of Law, Becker will now attend Lincoln Law School in Sacramento.

Once settled with a new job and house, he hopes to volunteer his coaching services to a local high school.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Becker previously coached at Grossmont, Steele Canyon, and Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego.

“I love California,” said Becker. “Like wrestling, it’s in my blood. The Sacramento area is actually great for wrestling. It’s the equivalent to the Chattanooga area in Tennessee.”

The move was not in the coach’s plans as he intended to practices law in the area for a couple of years before handing the Centennial program to an assistant. Like the coach said though, sometimes life happens.

“I’m going to miss the guys,” he said. “It was unexpected. It wasn’t last minute, but I certainly didn’t plan on leaving at this point.”

Becker has 16 years of experience as a wrestling coach and competed collegiately at Ursinus College near Philadelphia.
