Bruins' defense stymies Hunters Lane

Brentwood’s defense came up big when they needed it the most, holding Hunters Lane to three fourth-quarter points in the Bruins’ 43-36 win in the opening round of the Region 6-AAA boys tournament Friday night.

“We were playing too respectful and (Hunters Lane) is so patient that they’re eating huge chunks off the clock,” Brentwood coach Dennis King said. “We just had to gamble. We had to put pressure on them and if we couldn’t handle their quickness then so be it.”

Following a first half that saw four lead changes between District 11-AAA’s No. 4 seed Bruins and District 12-AAA’s No. 1 seed Warriors, went on a 6-2 run through the first five minutes of the second half for a game-high seven-point advantage.

Brentwood countered with a 10-0 run of their own to start the fourth quarter, taking a 36-33 lead before Devine Howard evened the score with a 3-pointer at the 4:40 mark.

Senior Cody Shelton put the Bruins on top for good minutes later with a 3-pointer. Shelton has been fighting a nagging knee injury for weeks, forcing him to be limited in practice.

“He still gets swelling in his leg and knee,” King said. “It makes me think that maybe coaches practice too much if he can come in and bang in some of the most crucial shots.”

Junior Andy Schumpert led the Bruins with 15 points with classmate Jacob Adcock adding eight.

Kevaughn Russell led Hunters Lane with 12 points.

The win snaps a two-game losing streak for Brentwood – their first of the season.

“With the season that we had, to end it with a three-game losing streak would be unbearable,” said King. “To still be alive is the greatest feeling in the world.”

Brentwood advances to the Region 6-AAA semifinals – to be held Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at Independence – where they will face Saturday night’s winner between No. 2 Independence and No. 3 McGavock.
