Brentwood outscored Hillsboro 24-1 over a seven-minute stretch Thursday night, defeating the Burros 56-36 in the boys’ Region 6-AAA title game.
“I just knew at some point the floodgates would open,” Bruins coach Dennis King said outside a victorious locker room. “We were getting the shots we wanted and we have too many good shooters.”
Hillsboro, the District 11-AAA tournament champions, cut a double-digit deficit to 27-24 late in the third quarter before the Bruins went on their run. During that stretch, Asa Duvall made 11 of his 14 points while Andy Schumpert got six of his game-high 15.
Burro guard Justin Crowder snapped the streak with a banked-in 3-pointer with 3:05 remaining in the game, making the score 51-28.
Hillsboro’s 6-foot-8 senior Jamonte Davis was held to two points in the second half although King says his team did nothing special to stop the future Tennessee State Tiger.
“We’re always keying on Davis,” the coach said. “When he plays with great energy, he is a handful. We just had to know where he was and bottle him up whenever we could.”
Davis finished with 11 points.
The win gives Brentwood their second-consecutive Region 6-AAA championship and sets up a rematch with Region 5-AAA runner up Wilson Central in the Class AAA sectional round.
Wilson Central upset Brentwood 60-52 in 2012, leaving Brentwood short of their first trip to the state tournament.
Brentwood, with revenge on their mind, will host Wilson Central Monday at 7 p.m.
