Opening Day went on as scheduled for Brentwood Academy despite early morning rain as the Eagles dropped a 5-1 decision at Goodpasture Christian School.

The defending Class AA state champions, Goodpasture overcame a 1-0 deficit after the top of the first with five-unanswered runs.

Leadoff hitter Alex Junior tied the score in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to left field by Jay Rheton. Caleb Wilson scored the go-ahead run two pitches later following a sharply hit single inside third base by Brandon Ashworth.

The Cougars widened the margin with three runs the following inning as Ryan Kemp reached the plate on a chopper by J.P. Brenzie, Conner Crocker on a Junior single through the infield, and Brenzie scoring on a Carter Wiseman single.

Eagles starting pitcher Ryan Victory would settle down the following four innings, allowing only two hits in a complete-game showing.

BA took a 1-0 advantage in the first frame as University of Alabama signee Will Haynie hit a 2-2 pitch deep over the centerfield wall. Haynie, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound catcher, was 2-for-2 at the plate on the game with a walk, single, and the first inning home run.

The Eagles take Tuesday off before starting a three-game series with Division II-AA state champion Battle Ground Academy Wednesday. That game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch on the BGA campus.
