Guske no-hitter opens Indy season

Brandon Guske opened Independence’s baseball season in style, throwing a no-hitter in the Eagles’ 12-0 win at Overton Tuesday night.

“He did a super job of staying ahead in the count – getting early strikes in the count,” Indy coach Bill Moore said of his starting pitcher. “He really just started the outs. Our defense really finished the outs well. He did a great job and our defense played great behind him.”

The 6-foot-3 right-hander struck out five Bobcat batters while walking just one in 77 pitches.

Overton did have runners on base despite going hitless as two batters were hit by pitches and an additional two reached on fielding errors.

The Bobcats remained within striking distance for a majority of the night before Independence scored nine in the top of the sixth inning to force the TSSAA’s run rule.

Independence took advantage of multiple Overton mistakes in the frame – including two errors, a passed ball, and a botched pick-off attempt. Daniel Wright scored the first run of the inning as he scampered home from third as Overton tried to stop Gavin Dea from stealing second base. Dea and Matthew May would each score three batters later as an Ethan Nieman line drive was misplayed in center field.

Bad luck continued for Overton, after two more Indy runs scored on a Kyle Marshall single to right field, when a routine pop up was lost in the lights between shortstop and left field – plating an additional two Eagle runners.

“It was a tight ballgame up to that point,” Moore said. “We got a couple of gifts there. The thing is – when you’re given something, are you going to capitalize? We did.”

Following a scoreless first inning, Indy took control in the second as a Marshall line drive to left field scored Nieman and Timmy Wright. Marshall would score on a Dea single two batters later, giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage.

“It was a nice test for us to come out and play a quality team like them,” said Moore. “I’m very proud of our guys.”

Indy continues their season Friday at Gallatin High School.
