Rebels top Indy for Ooltewah Classic

Franklin beat District 11-AAA rival Independence Saturday 13-3 for in the Ooltewah Classic baseball tournament March 23.

The game came three days after Independence took the team’s district series 2-1 with an 8-7 win in Thompson’s Station.

Saturday’s game was a different story as pitchers R.J. Bell and Gramm Sedano combined to hold Indy to four hits and two earned runs while Rebel bats could not be cooled.

Bell and Joseph Peters each had three hits and three runs batted in while Sedano, Austin McPeek, Danny Raley, and Demoss Stumbo all had two hits. Not to be outdone, Austin Winstead hit a three-run home run.

Franklin combined for a season-high 18 hits in the contest.

The Rebels won four-of-five games in the classic with the only loss coming via a 10-1 decision to Ooltewah Friday.

Danny Van Fleteren sent the team to the championship game with five scoreless innings in a 15-4 win against South Faytte (PA) Saturday. Winstead, Peters, and Graham Warren were each 2-2 from the plate with Winstead and McPeek each scoring three runs.

McPeek and Nick Hutchins scored three runs – while Warren drove in three – in Franklin’s 8-0 victory against Bradley Central earlier in the day.

Cullen Edwards got the win on the mound, throwing six scoreless innings.

Ryne Key threw Franklin’s first game of the tournament Friday, striking out nine without giving up a walk in Frankin’s 3-1 win against Cleveland.

Bell led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and two RBI.

Franklin plays out-of-district games against Smyrna and Montgomery Bell Academy during Spring Break before returning the district schedule against Ravenwood April 1.
