Bruins distance self in standings with win over Franklin

Brentwood distanced themselves in the District 11-AAA standings Monday night, defeating Franklin 6-4 at Nick Waggoner Field.

The Bruins (18-11, 7-2) recovered from a hitless first two innings with a four-hit, four-run bottom of the third.

Senior Cody Shelton scored the first run as an errant throw to third base was ruled a dead ball by the home plate umpire. John David Cage scored two batters later on a John Buntin single. A pair of two-out doubles by Bryan Reynolds and David Pimentel each plated two before the frame ended.

Franklin (14-9, 5-4) answered with a run in the fourth as Nick Hutchins opened with a double to right-center field and scored two batters later on a fly out to right field.

Brentwood cushioned their advantage in the fifth when Reynolds doubled to right-center field, scoring Buntin. Pimentel notched another RBI two pitches later as his sacrifice fly scored Hunter Anderson.

The Rebels did not go down without a fight. Austin McPeek hit a two-out double off the center field wall, scoring Josh Zarabi and Demoss Stumbo. Hutchins knocked McPeek in during the next at-bat on a line drive to left field, bring the tying run to the plate.

Graham Warren’s check swing ground ball caused a close play at first, but would be the final out of the game.

Clay Harris took the win for Brentwood on the mound. The 6-foot-3 junior scattered seven hits while striking out four on 85 pitches. He also walked four Rebels.

Bradley Turner was saddled with the loss for Franklin, striking out one and walking one while giving up eight hits.

Brentwood and Franklin continue the series Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Cheek Park.
