Heithcock, retired Franklin police officer, named Hometown Hero

Now retired, Tommy Heithcock, spent 36 years as a police officer in Williamson County, 26 of those with the city of Franklin. He’s also been a volunteer with Peytonsville’s Volunteer Fire Department, and currently serves as president of its board. Throughout his work and his life he’s approached it all in a show up and help however you can way and has been a longtime trusted source of assistance in his community. And, according to his family, he's been the same at home as he’s been in his work.

“You can always count on him to show up for important things in the life of our family, including school plays and first-grade graduations,” said Tommy's nephew, Kenny Heithcock, who also nominated his uncle for the award.

It is for his work serving our community that Tommy Heithcock was named the March 2013 Darrell Waltrip Automotive Hero.

“It has been an privilege and a honor to work and serve in my home town,” Heithcock said.

He was born and raised in Franklin, graduating from Franklin High School in 1969. Married to Lula, the Heithcocks have three adult children; Shannon, Emmy and Ben.

“Any young boy growing up looks to his father as a hero anyway, but being a police officer, he was a super hero,” said Heithcock’s eldest son, Shannon. “I saw how he treated people and worked with people, how he was honest and liked. I can't imagine him doing anything else. He was made to serve his community and help others.”

When asked how he is enjoying his time since retiring in December 2012, he said “More than you can imagine.”

As a part of his Hometown Hero award, a $500 donation will be made to Williamson County's Peytonsville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. in Heithcock’s name.

Darrell Waltrip presented Heithcock with the award April 10.
