Ravenwood continues memory with Pack the Park for Patton

Now in its fifth year, Ravenwood softball’s Pack the Park for Patton continues to serve the purpose of remembering a fallen teammate while giving back to the Raptor community.

Elizabeth Patton, a softball and basketball standout member of Ravenwood’s Class of 2009, died in November of 2008 of a rare autoimmune skin disorder called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

In the following years, the program hosts a Pack the Park for Patton event each year in which donations are collected in lieu of gate fees at the park. That money then goes to the Elizabeth Patton Memorial Fund, started by parents Benton and Carrie Patton.

Having the event, which takes place April 25 against Franklin this year, is something the family continually looks forward to.

“It means the world to me and my wife and our family,” Benton said. “We greatly appreciate what Ravenwood did for our daughter and what they continue to do to remember her. It means a lot to us.”

Approximately $40,000 has been raised by the foundation in five years.

The Patton’s take that money and award two or three $1,000 scholarships to Ravenwood seniors each year based on student essays submitted.

Game time for the game between the Lady Raptors and Lady Rebels is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on the Wilson Pike campus with a remembrance to be held between the junior varsity and varsity games.
