Pony Up! Its Equine Month
By Derby Jones, Publisher
I have always enjoyed horse racing, I was born on the first Saturday in May so that part comes naturally. Since moving to Williamson County, I experienced my first rodeo and fi rst Grand Prix event. I still need to attend a polo match, but that will come soon. I don’t ride horses, but I have added that to my bucket list. I have always appreciated the beauty of horses and horse farms, but other than that, my knowledge is limited.
A few years ago I listened to a presentation about the equine industry in Williamson County. Dr. Monty McInturff from Tennessee Equine was giving a presentation to the Franklin/Williamson County chamber luncheon that day. He immediately grabbed my attention with his passion and enthusiasm for his craft. However what really got my attention were the stats he shared with the chamber. I didn’t realize the impact of the equine industry in this county, much less the number of horse owners and horses.
Since that meeting in 2010, I have more knowledge, appreciation and respect for the horse industry and those who love horses. I have met numerous people, businessmen and women, Rotary club members and others who are just as passionate about horses as Monty McInturff.
Monty has asked me for years to include more coverage about the equine industry, readers have asked for more and the month of May seems like the perfect time to roll out Equine month.
So, with his encouragement the Williamson Herald, will dedicate space in the paper for the next fi ve weeks specifi cally for equine and the events that take place all over this great county. Carol Robinson, our senior staff writer and lone horse owner, has always done a great job covering the equine industry and equine related events for the paper will take on even more coverage over the next few weeks.
