A car salesman suffered a broken pelvis, a bruised kidney area and possibly a broken leg May 2 after being hit by a vehicle as he sat on a bench in front of the car lot’s sales office, according to a person close to the victim.

The victim was taken to the trauma unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and remained hospitalized the day after the incident, he said. The incident took place at the Drive Now used car lot at 110 New Highway 96 West in Franklin.

“As of 6 p.m. [May 2], they think he broke his pelvis and may have a broken leg,” the source said. “He also has a bruised area around his kidney.”

The Chevy Trailblazer forced the bench and the 71-year-old victim through a large window where the vehicle pinned him to the floor of the office, according to the Franklin Police Department.

“A customer was on a test drive, and thought he was hitting the brake [when parking the car]. Instead, he was hitting the gas,” said Rick Lee, lot manager. “The SUV crashed right through and took [the salesman] with him.”

It took Franklin firefighters about 20 minutes to free the man, who was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt, Lee said. The victim has worked at the lot for about one year.

The incident left a six-foot-by-six-foot hole to the right of the front door of building’s aluminum-sided front. City of Franklin Building and Neighborhood Services inspected the building and deemed it to be safe to conduct business if they were to board up the hole, according to Roger Childers, the lot’s general manager. The car lot resumed business this morning.

“We’ve got it boarded up,” he said this morning. “We’ve got our computers up and running, and we’re going to be able to do business.”

Lee said the event may have been captured on security cameras. The SUV involved in the incident was towed away with damage “to the front light and a little on the side,” he said.

No charges will be filed against the driver, according to Lt. Charles Warner, communications officer with the Franklin Police Department.
