Pitching duel ends with play at the plate

Ravenwood’s Zack Moore out-dueled Independence’s Brandon Guske Friday night in a showdown of right-handed pitchers as the Raptors defeated the Eagles 2-1 in the opening round of the District 11-AAA tournament.

Moore struck out seven Indy batters through the seven inning game, allowing just three hits while walking one.

Guske, on the other hand, scattered six hits, striking out five and walking one yet could not get out of the bottom of the seventh inning unscathed.

Tied 1-1 with a heavy rain just beginning to fall, Jordan Woelfle got on base with a leadoff single and advanced to third on a one-out infield single by Charlie Keith. Ravenwood chose to be aggressive, calling a squeeze play with Matthew Marconcini at the plate. Marconcini missed the bunt, seemingly leaving Woelfe hung between third and home, but the speedster managed to get out of the pickle and touch the plate to end the game.

Ravenwood took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Marconcini scored on a two-out chopper up the middle by Moore.

Independence evened the score in the fifth as a fly ball behind third base was misplayed, allowing Spencer Hammond to score.

The win advances the Raptors to a 1 p.m. meeting with Brentwood Saturday while Independence must face the loser of Centennial vs. Franklin at 4 p.m.
