Rain suspends District 11-AAA softball

Rain interrupted the District 11-AAA softball tournament Monday night in the first winners’ bracket contests with Ravenwood leading Centennial 2-0 and Franklin in front of Independence 3-2.

Both games will pick up at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Brentwood’s Crockett Park.

Ravenwood’s 2-0 lead came on back-to-back home runs by Kendal Diehl and Demi Patonis in the bottom of the second inning. Independence had been up 2-0 at the end of two innings, but Franklin scored a trio in the top of the third, including the go ahead run when Emily Bennicker was hit by a pitch. Franklin and Independence will continue with one out in the top of the third with bases loaded for the Lady Rebels.

Franklin got the winners’ bracket game by handling Hillsboro 13-2 in five innings. Bennicker’s solo home run led a barrage of Franklin hits with every starter getting at least one.

Centennial edged Brentwood 5-4 when freshman Cailin Hannon hit a sharp grounder to first, scoring Caitlin Cassady. Brentwood battled throughout the contest, a game that saw more total coaches’ conferences with umpires than innings.

The losers’ bracket games, originally scheduled for 5 p.m., will follow the two suspended contests. The loser of the Ravenwood-Centennial game will face Hillsboro and the loser of the Independence-Franklin contest will face Brentwood. The losers of those games will be eliminated.

Action continues Wednesday, with the championship contest set for Thursday afternoon. All games will be played at Crockett Park.
