Youthful play ends Franklin's season, Ravenwood advances in softball

An uncharacteristic series of errors, poor base running and quiet bats ended the season for the Franklin Lady Rebels May 13, falling 2-1 on the road at Overton.

“This is a very disappointing defeat,” said Franklin head coach Marshall Winkler.  “We didn’t put the ball in play. We weren’t ready to play and that’s my fault.

“And the Overton pitcher (Callie Lusk) did a great job.”

Overton was looking to avenge a 9-1 loss two weeks ago at Franklin, but got off to a rough start when Lusk hit Emily Binnicker in the helmet on the first pitch of the game. Lusk hit another Franklin batter in fourth, her only two mistakes of the day.

Amy Mitchell followed Binnicker with a bunt single, but was doubled up when Libby Sugg popped up to first base and the chance to jump on the Lady Bobcats early ended when Cassidy Hale was called out on strikes.

Senior Katie Moseley went the distance, giving up the two runs, both unearned, in the third inning. Three errors opened the door for both runs.

Moseley threw only 67 pitches in the contest.

Meagan Bell’s single in the top of the fifth was aided by Moseley’s sacrifice bunt. Bell scored when Binnicker’s long fly to center field was misplayed, but she was stranded at second when the inning ended.

Franklin appeared to have tied the game when senior Claire Easterling nailed a double down the left field line, sending Cassidy Hale headed for home. Hale was called out by the home plate umpire though she appeared to slide under the tag.

The Lady Rebels ended the season with a 25-14 record, the first time in nearly two decades Franklin posted 20-wins in a single season.

Overton will host District 11-AAA champion Ravenwood Wednesday in Nashville. The Lady Raptors had little trouble dispatching District 12-AAA runner-up McGavock at home Monday, 10-0. Ravenwood tallied two runs in the first and added five more in the second before shutting the Lady Raiders down in a run-rule shortened game.
