Franklin’s boys soccer team advanced to the Region 6-AAA finals with a 2-0 victory over District 12-AAA runner-up Antioch May 14.
After a scoreless first half, the Rebels found the back of the net with 33 minutes remaining in the match as Drew Collins beat his defenders on the wing, drawing attention from the Antioch goalkeeper, before sending a cross to a wide-open Matt Brady for an easy tap in.
Brady assisted on Franklin’s second goal 13 minutes later, finding Ben Norris for his first goal of the season.
“I received the ball, held it up, and knew the guy was on my back,” Brady said. “I saw that Ben had a wide-open shot so I laid it off for him.”
First-year Franklin coach Mike Burgoyne said he had a feeling this would be the game for the captain to make a big goal.
“That ball he hit was unbelievable,” he said. “I’ve got a feeling that he broke the ice and he’s going to score a couple more goals.”
The Rebels were the more aggressive team throughout, out-shooting the Bears 11-6. Despite a back-and-forth first half, Burgoyne was pleased with his team’s effort – especially in the 15-minute stretch in the second half when the team scored their goals.
“I thought in the second half we had a purpose when we made our passes,” Burgoyne said. “We were able to get the ball in the attacking third and get in behind defenders to create chances.”
Rebel goalie Parker Lamb was strong on the defensive end, making six saves.
Franklin (13-0-2) advances to host district rival Ravenwood (7-2-4) in the region final May 16 at 6:30 p.m. The Raptors beat 12-AAA champion Overton 3-0 in the semifinals.
Both schools are guaranteed spots in the Class AAA sectionals on May 18.
