Sanders' extra-inning single gives Cougars region title

Sophomore Deon Sanders was the hero for Centennial in Wednesday night’s Region 6-AAA title game as his two-out, bases-loaded line drive drove in Chase Carder to give the Cougars a 4-3 win in extra innings over Brentwood.
Brentwood’s Jake Bennie almost ended the threat as his diving attempts on the low line drive to center came up just short, trapping the ball against the grass.
The Cougars advance to host Rossivew, the Region 5-AAA runner-up, in Friday’s Class AAA sectional while Brentwood will travel to 5-AAA champion Mt. Juliet.
Brentwood took an early advantage in Wednesday’s marathon game, scoring two runs in the first inning as David Pimentel drove in John Buntin with a two-out single and was quickly driven in himself on a Cody Shelton double to right-center five pitches later.
Centennial answered in the bottom of the second with two-out hitting of their own as the Cougars took the lead via a bases-loaded, two RBI hit by Kyle Brennan.
The Bruins evened the score in the fifth as a Pimentel check-swing hit found the empty space between the pitcher’s mound and third base, scoring Matt Roland.
That run would be the last scored for 2 ½ innings as neither team could capitalize with runners in scoring position until Sanders’ single in the bottom of the eighth.
