Former wide receiver wins gold buckle at Franklin Rodeo

The Franklin Rodeo concluded its 64th year May 18 with record crowds and rodeo champions. A Texas cowboy came up as winner of the saddle-bronc riding gold buckle.

Wyatt Barstow, Decatur, Texas, scored 83 points to win the saddle-bronc riding and the gold buckle. It was the first time the 26 year old cowboy had competed in Franklin, and when he found out he had drawn J Bar J Rodeo’s Cat Man Do, he was delighted. “I had never seen him, but heard a lot about him. I was pretty excited to get on him today,” he said. The ride “went real well. The horse did most of the work for me, I felt. Sometimes that’s most of the battle. I just did my part and it all came together.”

Barstow, who grew up in Nebraska, played NCAA Division II football as wide receiver at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. He redshirted his freshman year, then played three more years before forgoing his fourth year of eligibility. “I was getting banged up, and my knees were going bad. I really wanted to continue my rodeo career for several more years.”

There are lots of similarities between football and rodeo, Barstow said.

“Any competition is mostly mental,” he said. “It’s keeping your mind over matter and knowing what you have to do. I just like being in competition. It’s a way to measure up to not only everybody else, but yourself.”

He and his wife Amanda got their bachelor’s degrees at UN-K, then Amanda pursued her occupational therapy degree at Texas Tech. Now they live in Decatur, where she is doing her field work. Wyatt said he will spend the summer riding saddle broncs before looking for employment.

A big check in the amount of $6,500 was presented to the Breast Health Center at the Williamson Medical Center for breast cancer treatment. This is the eighth year the rodeo has donated to the center.

Other winners at the Franklin Rodeo included bareback rider Casey Breuer, Mandan, N.D.; steer wrestler Bob Loosenort, Hazel, Ky.; team ropers Cody Graham, Everton, Mo.; and Gabe Gwaltney, Carthage, Mo.; barrel racer Nellie Miller, Sweetwater, Tenn.; and bull rider Dustin Hall, Springfield, Mo. For the second year, Waycross, Ga. cowboy Justin Thigpen won the tie-down roping.
