BAs Barnett wont let college recruitment affect senior season

Four-star football prospect Derek Barnett’s college decision will either be known shortly or will be months away.

“We may make a decision in August before my first game of the season,” the 2012 Mr. Football winner told Tate Mathews on his 104.5 The Zone radio show July 6. “If not then, it will be after the season so I can focus on my team and try and win a state championship.”

With 17 current offers, Barnett has a lot to chose from and has made five unofficial visits at this point in his recruitment. Of those schools, he said he was surprised with Missouri, that Tennessee has nice athletic facilities, and that he liked Vanderbilt too.

Barnett just returned to the midstate after a successful showing in The Opening, an invite-only football camp held by Nike on their campus.

Along with Station Camp High School’s Josh Malone, the pair of Middle Tennessee athletes feel they represented their state well.

“Me and Josh were on the same flight (home),” Barnett told Mathews. “We talked about it and we feel like we represented the state of Tennessee well. We’re proud of ourselves for doing that.”

Beech High School’s Jalen Hurd was also supposed to make the trip to Oregon, but was a late scratch due to injury.

In Oregon, Barnett first competed Monday in the SPARQ Challenge, a combine-like test that measures 40-yard dash time, vertical jump, and shuttle run. Next came position drills without pads, and two days of workouts in pads for lineman.

Barnett’s SPARQ Rating of 109.92 was the third best amongst defensive lineman while Malone’s 116.88 was good enough for eighth in the wide receiver group.

“It was good,” he said. “I learned a lot of good moves on defense. I was there as a defensive lineman so I got to work with some NFL guys. I got to meet a lot of new guys and it was a good experience.”
