BGA to induct 14 into Hall of Fame

Battle Ground Academy will induct 13 alumni and faculty members into the school’s Hall of Fame and recognize a Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year during a ceremony to be held on Saturday, Oct. 5.

“Our Hall of Fame celebrates those who have used BGA to propel them to great accomplishments in life, acknowledge the proficient athletes, and honor those teachers who had impact on their students,” said Jason Gregg, a 1990 graduate and director of alumni relations. “These inductees certainly embody these attributes.”

BGA honors inductees in the categories of Alumni Hall of Fame, Faculty Hall of Fame and Sports Hall of Fame. 2013 recipients include:

Buddy Benedict
BGA Class of 1960, Alumni Hall of Fame, Buddy Benedict, founder of the Battle Ground Academy Alumni Association and former member of the Board of Trustees, has been a leader in the Middle Tennessee business community. He has served as president of the Nashville Securities Association as well as the Downtown Nashville Rotary Club and has been a leader in various Methodist Churches in the Nashville area. He currently resides in Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Mickey Crowell
BGA Class of 1958, Alumni Hall of Fame, Dr. Mickey Crowell has continued to be a true leader in the BGA community after serving three terms as class president and playing multiple varsity sports during his four years at BGA. He led the efforts of the Class of 1958 to raise money to start a scholarship fund and also served as chairman of the 2011-12 Annual Fund Campaign. He currently resides in Louisville, Tenn.

Rod Daniel
BGA Class of 1960, Alumni Hall of Fame, Rod Daniel has been nominated for three TV Emmy Awards and has directed and produced episodes of well-known shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond, Men Behaving Badly, and Magnum P.I. He also directed multiple movies including the 1985 Michel J. Fox film, Teen Wolf. He currently resides in Chicago, Ill.

George Trabue
BGA Class of 1951, Alumni Hall of Fame, George Trabue, member of the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, started working for Eastman Chemical Company in 1957 as a trainee and worked his way up to become President. Under Trabue, Eastman was named one of the ‘Top Five Sales Companies’ by Sales & Marketing Magazine in 1994. He currently resides in Kingsport, Tenn.

Peggy Burnette
Faculty Hall of Fame, Peggy Burnette gave more than 20 years of service to the Upper School Math department before retiring in 2012. She was the former Math Department chairwoman and won BGA’s 2009-10 2nd Mile Award. She currently resides in Franklin, Tenn.

Emma Wooten “Mama” Haynes (deceased)
Faculty Hall of Fame, Emma Wooten “Mama” Haynes served as a beloved housemother in BGA’s dormitories during the 1930s and 1940s.

Gloria Kinnard
Faculty Hall of Fame, Gloria Kinnard has taught at BGA and Harpeth Academy for 26 years. She taught Middle School English until retiring this past May. She currently resides in Spring Hill, Tenn.

Emma McElroy
Faculty Hall of Fame, Emma McElroy has taught in the Upper School Math department for more than 17 years. She is a three-time winner of the Golden Apple Award and two-time winner of the 2nd Mile Award. She currently resides in Franklin, Tenn.

Dr. Terry Geshke
BGA Class of 1960, Sports Hall of Fame, Dr. Terry Geshke was a four-year baseball letterman at BGA and served as team captain his senior year. He also played three years of varsity basketball helping his team advance to the State Tournament his senior year. Following BGA, he was a two-sport athlete at Vanderbilt, playing baseball and basketball. He currently resides in Memphis, Tenn.

Stephen Harvey
BGA Class of 1993, Sports Hall of Fame, Stephen Harvey played multiple sports at BGA, excelling in wrestling and baseball. While wrestling his senior year, he was selected County Wrestler of the Year, Coaches Dream Team, All Mid-State, All State, and was the 1993 State Champion. Stephen was also an All County, All District, and All Mid State pitcher his senior year and pitched at Milligan College after graduation. He currently resides in Nashville, Tenn.

Larry Kain
BGA Class of 1966, Sports Hall of Fame, Larry Kain was a two-sport athlete at BGA, obtaining an honorable mention All Mid State in both basketball and baseball. Following BGA, Larry pitched at Auburn University and has been a long time member of the BGA Alumni Board, serving two terms as president of the Alumni Board. He currently resides in Brentwood, Tenn.

Rhonda Menifee
BGA Class of 1986, Sports Hall of Fame, Rhonda Menifee was voted Player of the Decade for the 1980s for her excellence in basketball while at BGA. She is a member of the 1000 Points Career Club and was voted Most Athletic in 1984. Following BGA, she received a basketball scholarship to Belmont. She currently resides in La Vergne, Tenn.

Brad Myers
Sports Hall of Fame, Brad Myers, head baseball coach since 1993, was named Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Division II AA Coach of the Year, TSSAA State of Tennessee Baseball Coach of the Year – All Divisions, and American Baseball Coaches Association Division III Region Coach of the Year in 2012. He has coached BGA to seven regular season championships, five region tournament championships, two state runner ups, and the 2012 State Championship. He currently resides in Franklin, Tenn.

In addition, Dr. Griffin Myers, BGA Class of 1999, will be honored as the Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year. Myers earned his M.D. and M.B.A. at the University of Chicago after graduating BGA. He has served as project leader for the Boston Consulting Group and president of American TeleCare. He currently serves as resident physician at Harvard University.
