Okeeheelee tops West Raleigh for Cal Ripken title

West Raleigh looked to get an early start, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Okeeheelee (FL) answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning, cruising to a 13-3 victory in the championship game of the Cal Ripken 9U Southeast Regional yesterday at Jim Warren Park.

The two out of state teams settled the battle for the title between themselves after eighteen other teams, including the host Franklin Falcons and Grassland Smoke, were eliminated in pool play Thursday and Friday.

West Raleigh struggled at the mound early, eventually using three different hurlers to try and stop a very offensively minded Braves team.  Okeeheelee scored in each of the four innings played, including taking on a pair in their last at bat to force the run-rule decision.

The event drew nearly 4,000 spectators over the four days, while filling up local lodging and eating establishments.
