Cheekwood adds new evening dates for light exhibition
NASHVILLE, TN. – Since its opening over Memorial Day weekend, Cheekwood’s acclaimed LIGHT: Bruce Munro at Cheekwood exhibition has attracted thousands of visitors during extended Wednesday through Friday evening hours. Due to its record-setting popularity, Cheekwood has added additional nighttime opportunities to experience the magic of LIGHT as summer turns to fall, before the installation exhibition closes on November 10.
The botanical garden and art museum will celebrate the Fall Equinox on September 21 with a special unprecedented Saturday night opportunity to view the exhibition. This event will follow the same format as the popular Friday evening viewings throughout the summer, with cash bars stationed throughout the grounds and bands playing live music tucked into the gardens, adding to the enchanted feel.
As fall approaches, additional weeknights will be added to extend the regular Wednesday through Friday night schedule. Visitors will be able to view LIGHT in the dark until 11 p.m. every Tuesday in September and select Tuesdays in October: October 1, 15 and 29. Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance for a simplified admissions experience at Cheekwood.org.
“The Nashville community’s response to LIGHT has been simply incredible,” said Jane O. MacLeod, President & CEO of Cheekwood. “We’re excited to be experiencing a demand from our crowds for more chances to visit and re-visit this milestone exhibition before it’s gone. Offering additional evening hours is a pleasure.”
From Vogue Magazine to Martha Stewart Living, LIGHT is getting attention across the country as a must-see, must-do experience of 2013. Using an inventive array of materials and hundreds of miles of glowing optic fiber, Munro's acclaimed installation transforms the Cheekwood estate from a beautifully manicured botanic garden by day into an enchanting, dream-like landscape each evening at dusk. This site-specific exhibition was specially designed by the artist to incorporate Cheekwood’s gentle hills, expansive views and magnificent grounds. At the center of the exhibition’s many installations is the Field of Light, featuring twenty thousand hand-blown glass spheres rising from the ground atop delicate stems, each one holding a coil of glowing optic fiber. The sheer volume of spheres, the “breathing” glow of the lights and the gentle shapes create an effect that is both natural and otherworldly.
