WCS triples schools named as Reward Schools

The number of reward schools in Williamson County Schools almost tripled in 2012-13 compared to 2011-12, according to state reports.

2011-12 - 9 Reward Schools
2012-13 - 26 Reward Schools

“It is affirming to see that individual schools in WCS are being recognized for superior achievement,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney said.

Looney attributes the increase to “a relentless focus on rigor, relevance, and relationships on behalf of our teachers and principals.

Today, the Tennessee Department of Education announced schools across the state that achieved “Reward School” status, which recognizes schools in the top 5 percent in one or both of two categories – “performance” and “progress.”

Performance is measured by a one-year academic success rate, while progress is measured by a one year Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) school composite. According to the state website, TVAAS measures how much students grow academically in a year, thus determining the impact schools and teachers have on their students’ academic progress.

“With the school board’s leadership, the tenacity of our employees, and the hard work of our students, we continue to outpace schools across the country. Hopefully, this nearly 300 percent increase in Reward Schools will delight our community and demonstrate what an incredible return on investment WCS provides the citizens of Williamson County.”

TDOE Commissioner Kevin Huffman said that schools across the state are progressing, but Reward Schools are rising to the top in performance and progress.

“As schools across the state made improvements and reached higher levels of proficiency, Reward Schools led the way,” TDOE Commissioner Kevin Huffman wrote in a report.

The state board of education approved the list of Reward Schools at their meeting Aug.16 and were named publicly today. As outlined in the state’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility Waiver, the department identifies Reward Schools annually.
