State Fair looks to Williamson County for pageant entries

The director of pageants for the Tennessee State Fair is seeking entries from Williamson and other counties across the state to participate in this year's pageants in which the real winners will be terminally ill children at Vanderbilt's Monroe Carrell, Jr. Children's Hospital.

Partnering with "Crowns for a Cause," the State Fair pageants are to be held on Sept. 13 and 14. The Fairest of the Fair event for ages 17-20 is scheduled for the first evening beginning at 6 o’clock.

Pageant events the next day begin at 10 in the morning and include categories for ages birth-12 months; 13 months to 24 months; 25 months to 47 months; the Little Mister contest for ages 4-6 years; and all other events representing ages 4-16.
The deadline to enter pageants by mail is August 31, although contestant entries will be accepted at the door up until one hour prior to the beginning of a specific pageant event.

According to Pageant Director Shan Burklow, contestants at the State Fair pageants, beauty queens from across the state, are to show their support for “Crowns For a Cause” this year by donating their crowns to terminally ill children of the Monroe Carrell, Jr. Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville.

"These children will be crowned ‘Queen for a Day’ using donated crowns from title holders of all ages. They will also receive Rated G DVDs purchased from donations received during the five pageants.

“This small act of kindness brings huge smiles to the faces of these sick children,” said Burklow. "Little girls will be crowned 'Queen for a Day' along with little boys being 'Hero for a Day' and receiving a firefighter’s helmet."

Burklow said she would like to raise enough money from donations to purchase a Rated G DVDs for every child.
"These sweet kids spend so much time in bed and cannot go outside and play like healthy children. Giving them a new movie can help brighten their day," she said.
