BGA scores on Goodpasture errors

The method was not always the most ideal, but the desired result was the payoff for Battle Ground Academy Friday night.

The Wildcats (2-1, 0-0) won a war of mistakes with Goodpasture, besting the Cougars 35-14. BGA quarterback Tucker Beathard ran for three touchdowns, and the ‘Cats took advantage of five Goodpasture turnovers and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown to keep their momentum.

“It’s great to know we have our defense and special teams to pick us up when things aren’t going well,” Beathard said. “I have great confidence in our defense, and they stepped up tonight.”

Both teams made mistakes early, but BGA (1-1) was able to rebound from the early errors and get strong play from its defense after a lackluster outing against Father Ryan on Aug. 30.

“We killed ourselves last week with mistakes,” BGA coach Roc Batten said. “This week we focused on creating turnovers and taking advantage of those turnovers. I was pleased with the way we finished.”

Goodpasture (1-2) got 186 yards and both touchdowns on the ground from running back Carter Wiseman, but the Cougars never could find any consistency with their offense. They routinely would stall drives with penalties and committed four of their five turnovers in the second half.

The Cougars were flagged 10 times for 73 yards, while BGA had just three penalties for 25 yards.
“Taking advantage of their mistakes was huge,” Beathard said. “They’ve got a great running back, and you don’t know if he’s going to bust one for 70 yards.”

Both teams traded touchdowns and turnovers in the first half, but Goodpasture could not make the big plays to keep drives alive. The Cougars converted just 1-of-5 on third down in the first half and 3-of-8 for the game. BGA was 5-of-9 on third down.

The big spark for the Wildcats came with under a minute remaining until halftime, when Terrell Webster burst through the middle of Goodpasture’s punt protection and blocked Wiseman’s kick. Glenn Young picked it up for the Wildcats and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead with just 35 seconds left before halftime.

“That play was huge, especially right before the half like that,” Beathard said.

“We have to make plays on special teams,” Batten said. “If we have an opportunity to get points or change the field, we have to do that.”

The ‘Cats added another touchdown after a Goodpasture interception early in the third quarter, with Beathard sneaking in from a yard out after driving 65 yards in eight plays.

The Cougars answered with a 44-yard TD run from Wiseman, but their next drive was halted by a Wiseman fumble that Cole Grosvenor pounced on at the BGA 19.

Beathard and the ‘Cats marched 81 yards in 12 plays to score on a 3-yard run from Webster, effectively putting the game out of reach at 28-14.

Goodpasture would turn it over on its next two possessions, and BGA added a final TD on Beathard’s 17-yard run to cap off the scoring.

BGA travels to Mount Pleasant next Friday.
