Middle Tennessee Native and OMore Alumnas New York Fashion Week Debut
O’More 2012 Graduate Jennifer Nina Evans To Show Collection Sunday, Sept. 8
NEW YORK, New York—Recent O’More College of Design graduate Jennifer Nina Evans will debut a spring collection during the 2013 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Empire Hotel Rooftop. This will be the first full spring collection designed by the alumna.
The Middle Tennessee native, who graduated from the College in 2012, will exhibit 12 looks alongside five other emerging designers. Evans also participated in the 2012 and 2013 Nashville Fashion Week, and says the experiences ultimately segued to her New York Fashion Week participation.
“Being selected to be part of this is a pretty remarkable thing. I’m working with a company called Cynique Evoule, and they helped secure a spot at New York Fashion Week,” Evans said. “The thing that really got their attention was my fall collection during Nashville Fashion Week. It stood out, I think, because my aesthetic is to go big or go home.”
As part of 2013 Nashville Fashion Week, Evans’ “Blood” collection included both ready-to-wear and couture pieces. Evans says her 2014 “Addiction” collection, debuting Sunday, will once again showcase the label’s versatile style through both luxurious casual clothing and high-end evening wear.
“I like to think of fashion in more of an artistic aesthetic. I first pick an inspiration, which then drives the silhouettes and color palette,” she said. “My inspiration, which is addiction, is a bit dark—but ultimately the collections finds calm in the midst of intensity.”
Evans says she used fabrics to emphasize tranquility in the midst of chaos: wool and silk fabrics are custom printed—one look draws on a Mt. Fuji sunset—and paired against harder details, such as motorcycle jackets and leather detailing. The collection’s color palette ranges from sky blue and blush to midnight black and creamy white, and Evans also utilized silhouettes to tie into her theme.
“For each look, I completely start over with my patterns so that my silhouettes continue to change,” she said. “Through this collection, I wanted to show different sides. It contains high-end ready-to-wear and couture pieces. Because of that, there is a lot of lace detailing, hand pleating and contrasting elements. A lot of detail went into each piece [there are around 30 pieces].”
Following the Mercedes-Benz event, Evans says she will work on selling the collection that was shown at the 2013 Nashville Fashion Week. The designer also has plans to begin work on a 2014 winter collection, as well as an animal wear line that will benefit non-profits devoted to animal advocacy.
