By Joe Williams, Sports Editor
Brentwood junior Cameron Smith fired a one-over 73 yesterday, dropping him into a log jam of five others three-strokes behind Coffee County’s Matt Johnson, the first round leader at the TSSAA State Golf Championship at WillowBrook Golf Course in Manchester, TN.
Johnson, who calls WillowBrook his home course, is being hounded by ten other individuals three strokes or less behind him. Five others are only two more strokes behind, including Ravenwood’s Hunter Howell.
As a team, Brentwood will enter the second and final round today in third place after yesterday’s 308, ten strokes behind leader Hendersonville, four strokes behind Houston and tied with Knoxville Farragut. Smith’s 73 led the team that includes Chris Tyminski (77), Hayden Goodheart (78) and Trevor Johnson (80).
On the girls side, Haley Smith of Independence posted the best first round score among county players with an 86. Smith struggled on the back nine with the windy conditions to finish 14 strokes behind leader Aubree Jones of Brighton.
Ravenwood is seventh in the team competition, 15 strokes behind Rossview, Science Hill and Warren County. All three carded 162’s for the day. Courtney Cravens (88) and freshman Ann Catherine Blackburn (89) had nearly identical scores.
