Brentwood, Indy, Centennial advance to district semi-finals

The ultra-competitive District 11-AAA volleyball world grew smaller by three yesterday, as Summit, Franklin and Dickson County were eliminated in the district tournament quarter-finals.

Brentwood eased past Summit 25-7, 25-13, 25-11 to force a semi-final match-up with Centennial.  The Cougars beat the Cougars of Dickson County 25-6, 25-13, 25-11, looking much improved over their last three regular season games.

Independence and Franklin fought a typical rivalry-fed duel on the Eagles home court.  Indy took the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-10, before the Rebels caught fire, forcing a fourth game with a 25-22 nail-biting win in the third.

The fourth set was even more of a nail biter, as neither team could gain more than a 3 point advantage, as the lead changed hands 14 times.  In the end, Indy ran off three straight to take the match with a 25-22 victory.

Yesterday’s action set up a pair of semi-final matches today, heading into tonight’s championship contest.  Top seeded Ravenwood, which earned a bye through the quarter-finals, will face Independence at 4:30 p.m. while Brentwood and Centennial meet at 6 p.m. to determine the final championship contender.

Semi-final losers are eliminated from further play, while the two title contenders are guaranteed a spot in next week’s Region 6-AAA tournament.

The finals are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
