Franklin tops TSSAA play-off standings for Week Seven
By Joe Williams, Sports Editor
The Franklin Rebels sit atop the Class 6A play-off rankings for Week Seven and would be the top seed overall if the season ended today, with three others in the district still in the running.
In Division I, participation in the play-offs, with the final pay-off a shot at the state title in Cookeville in December, is guaranteed to the top two teams in each of the 16 districts across the state. Because each district typically has teams from two classes, teams that do not finish in the top two have an opportunity to advance. That opportunity is based on a 16-step selection criterion.
With Franklin leading District 11-AAA, their spot is basically assured. Ravenwood, currently second in the district pending Friday’s huge contest between the two at Howard Gamble Stadium on Franklin’s campus, is also locked into the series.
Independence and Centennial, who battled last week with the Eagles grabbing the win, are also on the current list of 32 in Class 6A. The Cougars, though, are the 31st team on the list and will need to win out to stay in the mix. Independence, at 28th on the list, is in much the same situation.
In Class 4A, Page is still in the running. The Patriots, though struggling some in the win column, remains a contender as the 28th team on the qualifying list this week.
Fairview is solidly in position to both make the play-offs and potentially host a first round game, sitting 11th out of the current 32 qualifiers in Class 3A. The lone loss so far this season was to Lewis County, which is 4th on the list.
In Division II-A, BGA needs a win Friday night at Zion Christian in Columbia to lock up a play-off spot. A win would also set up a East/Middle District 2 championship match-up the next week at home against Franklin Road Academy. Both teams are expected to enter that game undefeated in the district.
All teams in Division II-AA, including Brentwood Academy, are guaranteed a spot in the play-offs.
Play-off standings are reset each Tuesday by the TSSAA, though final selection, seeding and pairings are not announced until the Saturday morning following the last game of the year.
