BGA hosts memorial service for Robert Walker on Saturday, Oct. 26

Battle Ground Academy is hosting a memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. for the late Robert Walker, 59, a long-time teacher who passed suddenly last week. The service will be held at the Harlin Student Center on BGA’s Glen Echo Campus and will be open to current and past students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and others who would like to pay their respects.

Mr. Walker was a Nashville native and the son of the late Robert E. and Mary Herbert Walker. He was preceded in death by his sister Frances Herbert Walker. He is survived by his son, Paul Walker, a 2009 BGA graduate now teaching in China; daughter, Grace Walker, a 2006 BGA graduate now living in Torrington, Conn.; former wife, Celia Walker; sister, Ann W. (Mrs. Robert C.) Harwell, and nieces, Lace (Mrs. Mark) Hardison, and Sarah Harwell.

Mr. Walker graduated from the University of Tennessee and received his Master’s degree in history from Vanderbilt University. From an early age, he exhibited a prodigious intellect and a love of learning with a natural progression into the field of teaching. He joined the BGA faculty in 1981 and continued teaching a full load of academic classes until his passing.

His dedication to his profession, love of students and outstanding ability to instruct and engage earned him many accolades over the years. He was inducted into BGA’s Faculty Hall of Fame in 2001, received the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching multiple times and had the yearbook dedicated to him by the students in multiple years.

The family has requested that donations be made in Mr. Walker’s honor to Battle Ground Academy or to a charity of choice. The Robert Walker Memorial Wall has been set up on Facebook for friends of Mr. Walker to share stories and photos.
