Franklin leads four-team contingent to state soccer tourney

BGA’s Taylor Knight (3) and Tori Warren (12) keep the ball away from Sacred Heart’s Sadie Odom (44),
Anna Easley (23) and Mary Hatch (5) in Saturday’s 1-0 win.  The victory has the Wildcats playing
in the Division II A semi-finals in Murfreesboro tomorrow with a slot in the state title game Saturday at stake.

Franklin will be looking for its 14th state soccer championship this week when the Rebels are joined by Ravenwood, Fairview and BGA in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s State Championship Event at the Siegel Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro.
Franklin’s run for a potential 14th title could be blocked by district nemesis Ravenwood in the final game Saturday if both keep winning.
The Raptors and Rebels played a pair of classic over-time marathons in the district and regional finals, splitting the two games.
Meredith Slessman (18), Liza Harbin (16) and Delany Griffin (11) lead Franklin in goals, while sophomore keeper Jessica Harvey has eight shut-outs.
Ravenwood has swapped the state’s top ranking with the Rebels all season long and are looking for one more shot at Franklin in Saturday’s finals.
Ravenwood opened the Class AAA with an afternoon game against Collierville in the lower bracket, while Franklin took on Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett in the upper bracket.  Both were favorites to advance; for final scores see today’s Williamson Herald E-Blast.
With the expected wins, Franklin would play either Oakland or Houston at 2:30 p.m. today for a spot in the finals, while Ravenwood would have to get past either Cookeville or Farragut at 5 p.m. today to take the other spot in Saturday’s 11 a.m. Class AAA championship contest.
In Class A/AA, Fairview’s girls made school history by becoming the first soccer team to make the state tournament.  The Yellow Jackets opened yesterday against a tough Knoxville Catholic squad. With a win, they could face either Liberty or Chattanooga Notre Dame today at 2:30 p.m.
BGA returns to the Division II A semi-finals tomorrow with a 2:30 p.m. match against St. George’s.
A win in that contest would propel the Wildcats into the state championship game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against either University School of Jackson or Evangelical Christian School out of Cordova.
