Franklin High band takes home competition accolades

The Franklin High Band ended their marching band season in Indianapolis this weekend at the Bands of America Grand Nationals Championship, securing a spot in the Semi-Finals competition, scoring 15th in the nation, and second in class AAA for the second year in a row. The competition was fierce with ninety-one bands representing twenty states.

The band took a break from the competition on Friday to visit Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Augustine to present hand-made superhero capes for the children, and later that day performed a concert for residents of the Little Sisters of the Poor Home.

One of the core values for Franklin Band is Community.  Director David Aydelott explains, “We come to Indianapolis every year for Grand Nationals. We have the last few years and it’s become kind of our second home. Our kids and parents love being here. It’s a great city for us to be in, so the idea of having some of the downtime we usually have between prelims performance and other things on Saturday, we decided to fill that time up with doing some community service.”

Carol Huber, one of Franklin’s Super Band Moms, found information about the St. Vincent’s Capes for Kids project, and rallied the band kids and other talented moms to create 190 capes to deliver to the kids during their visit to Indianapolis.

The Franklin Band has had an incredible 2013 season, winning the MTSU Contest of Champions, as well as the Bands of America Regional Championship in Powder Springs, Georgia in October. The hard work and dedication of these students continues, as many prepare for Mid-State Band auditions next month, while Directors Aydelott, Michael Holland and Monica Zsolt are already hard at work on next year’s show.
