Meeting schedule to discuss aid for injured wrestler

Independence officials have scheduled a meeting for tonight at 7 p.m. at the school to discuss opportunities to assist Hunter Garstin, an Eagle wrestler who suffered a critical injury in a match Saturday in Huntsville, Alabama

“There has been such an outpouring of support, we felt like it would be good to get everybody together at once time,” said Garstin’s coach, Jared Grindstaff.  “We are at the start of a long road.”

Garstin was injured during a match after being taken down on the mat in what his coach called, “…nothing really unusual, nothing illegal,” with his neck in chin-down position.  Garstin was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where he underwent surgery to repair and fuse disks in the cervical region of the spine.

The freshman was moving his arms and making progress on other tasks, according to Grindstaff, who visited the hospital and family this morning.

When Garstin is released in Huntsville, he will be moved to a rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery.
